New York, I Love You: Shopping Edition
by Emily
Since New York is one of the most fantastic places to shop in the world, it's no surprise that I make my way in and out of almost every store on 5th Avenue etc. There are always those few stores that I return to make purchases at. Here is the exclusive list of stores I frequent:
Scoop NYC
There's a few of these in the city but if I were going to choose one to go to it would be the one on Broadway. It's much larger than the others. For some reason I enjoyed the experience there more. They have a bunch of items that are their own company or other designers for Scoop. You can find most contemporary designers here. There's Alice and Olivia, Missoni, Free City etc. As you can see there's a wide variety for any type of shopper.
Intermix
If your'e going to go to Intermix, go to the one on the Upper East Side. It's more spacious than the others I've been to. They carry similar stuff as Scoop but it's a bit more pricey so beware. I'll occasionally purchase something but I generally just enjoy browsing the store.
Calypso St. Barth
Soho. Soho. Soho. There's literally one on every block and one's an outlet. I grabbed a cute pair of summer shoes for cheap. There's quite a few Calypso's throughout the city but I'd definitely make a point to stopping in the one in Soho. Every time I shop there it makes me want to take a trip to the Caribbean.
Zoe
This store is similar to Intermix but it's in Brooklyn. I was wandering the streets of DUMBO going into every furniture store I found trying to find new things for my new house and I came across this adorable boutique. The employee's are nice and the clothes are fantastic. It has a great layout to wander around in. I didn't expect to find a store like this on this street but I loved it.
Jonathan Adler
I'm obsessed with the furniture from here. It's a bit pricey but it's a great place to get ideas of what you want. It's somewhat a classic contemporary style. Many items are traditional while others are hysterical. They sell a Peacock lollipop holder. Despite how ridiculous that sounds. I want it.
Bergdorf Goodman
Located on the corner of 58th and 5th, Bergdorf's is by far my favorite department store in the city. It's a sister to Neiman Marcus which is a store in Los Angeles that I frequent. There is plenty to choose from whether you want to purchase a pair of Manolo's or a pair of J Brand's, almost any shopper willing to throwdown some money can find exactly what they need here. To top it off, there's an adorable restaurant (mentioned in the first New York post) in the cosmetic department downstairs. While you're down there, check out the headbands.
Henri Bendel
This used to be my favorite until they removed the clothes. Bendel's is now an accessory and cosmetics only department store. Regardless, I still always make my way through. There are many unique accessories you won't find anywhere else. If you decide to hit up Bergdorf's, make your way down the street to Bendel's as well.
Tiffany & Co.
Three words: Breakfast at Tiffany's! If you're looking for jewelry or another gift of some sort, you may have some luck here. This Tiffany's is much larger than the one I have here in Los Angeles so I enjoy making my way through since I'm a lover of Tiffany's jewelry.

Cinnamon Agave Almonds
by Emily
Time for a sweet treat that doesn't contain tons of sugar and won't give you that sugar rush then crash. They make for an awesome snack that anyone can enjoy!
Cinnamon Agave Almonds
2 cups Raw Almonds
3 tablespoons Agave
2 tablespoons Olive Oil
3 teaspoons Cinnamon
2 teaspoons Sea Salt
Preheat your oven to 350°. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Place the mixture in a pirex. Toss together to make sure the mixture is evenly on all the almonds. Place in oven for about 20 minutes (until done). When the time is up, take the almonds out of the oven and allow to cool for a couple minutes. Transfer the almonds to a piece of foil to allow for further cooling and hardening. If needed, sprinkle some sea salt and/or cinnamon (to taste). Enjoy!
Summer Salad
by Emily
I like to think of myself as a salad pro at this point. I eat at least one salad a day and they are never identical. I try something new every time but I have a general skeleton that I stick to. It's refreshing to eat a salad on a warm summer night so head to the market and grab your favorite veggies and let's get started.
Summer Salad (serves 1-2)
a handful of baby greens
a handful of spinach
1 persian cucumber
1/2 avocado
a handful of cherry tomatoes
two large spoonfuls of garbanzo beans
1/2 red pepper
1/2 white onion or maui onion (the sweeter the better)
1 medium sized lemon
olive oil
crushed garlic
sea salt
goat cheese
Put the greens, spinach, tomatoes and garbanzo beans in a bowl. Slice the cucumber, avocado, pepper and onion. Add vegetables to the others in the bowl. Squeeze the juice of the lemon onto the salad. Drizzle some olive oil. Sprinkle a pinch or so of salt. Scoop a teaspoon of garlic. Add as much goat cheese as you desire. Toss together. Enjoy.

You can also choose to sautee the pepper and onion before hand. I think it makes it sweeter and adds a lot to the salad. In a small saucepan with some olive oil and garlic, cook the chopped vegetables for about 5 minutes on medium heat.
Sometimes I also add a little Annie's Lemon & Basil dressing to add some other flavors.
You can choose your protein option also. I really like hard-boiled eggs and grilled chicken breasts chopped up and added.
Obviously you can add whatever you would like to the salad but this is just how I enjoy mine and I promise it's delicious!
What do YOU like in your salads?

Kale Chips
by Emily
So I'm on this new anti-inflammatory detox diet so I can't snack on my favorite Terra Chips temporarily. Those always satisfied my craving for something salty. I needed to find a substitute. Meet Kale Chips. It's exactly what it sounds like and they're extremely addicting and delicious.
Kale Chips (1-2 servings)
1 bunch of Kale
Olive Oil
Sea Salt
Preheat oven to 350°. Wash and dry Kale thoroughly. Remove the leaves from the stem and tear leaves into pieces. Try to get them about 3-4" because they do shrink up in the oven. Place leaves in a bowl. Drizzle some olive oil and toss. Lay the Kale on a parchment lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with sea salt to taste. Place in oven for 10-12 minutes. Enjoy.
Simple enough?

New York, I Love You: Restaurant Edition
by Emily
This April, I was fortunate enough to spend a week in New York with my mom. We went everywhere! I was so exhausted when I returned. I went to a bunch of new and old places considering I hadn't been to New York in years so everything old was new again. I want to share my adventures with you. Maybe when you decide to travel to New York you will try some of my suggestions. I'm going to cover restaurants, shopping, theater and other. Any recommendations are welcome considering I'm already planning my trip back.
Time to begin our journey through New York with restaurants:
The Burger Joint in Le Parker Meridian:
Best. Burger. Ever. Well maybe not as good as Apple Pan but this is a close second. It is literally a hole in the wall behind the front desk of the hotel. The glowing burger is the sign outside the room. Line up. Order. Grab your food. Grab a table. Or not.... Some people rudely snatched tables from others. Instead of waiting around, we took our burgers to bed and later ordered room service for dessert. A perfect low-key night in the crazy city. Don't let the long line scare you. It's well worth the wait.
What I Ate:
Time to begin our journey through New York with restaurants:
Breakfast/Brunch
Balthazar:
Located in Soho, Balthazar is known for having one of the best, if not the best, brunches in New York. I have a love for Eggs Benedict so of course, I had to try theirs as well.
What I Ate:
What I Ate:
Drink - Mimosa
Main Course - Eggs Benedict and Crepe du Jour (buckwheat crepe filled with eggs, cheese and sausage)
Dean and Deluca:
Of course I had to go to Dean and Deluca. Where else will I find a gourmet pastry steps from Central Park? Every time I step foot into Dean and Deluca, I wish more and more that there was one in Los Angeles. Oh well, a girl can dream.
What I Ate:
Drink - Vanilla Latte
Food - Blueberry Muffin
Lunch
Goodman's in Bergdorf Goodman:
This restaurant is a mother-daughter favorite in my family. I've eaten here too many times to count. It's my absolute favorite place for a quick bite to eat when running around the city. It's hidden downstairs in Bergdorf's Cosmetic Department. They have delicious sandwiches (the tea sandwiches are my favorite!) and great gourmet salads!
What I Ate:
Appetizer - Deviled Eggs
Main Course - Tea Sandwiches and the Gotham Salad
Grimaldi's in Brooklyn:
Yes, I ventured over the bridge to Brooklyn and it may have been one of my favorite New York days ever. Grimaldi's is for sure a "tourist trap" but it was hands down the best pizza I have ever had. To top it off, it's family owned and run so it's an authentic experience. The pizza had just the right amount of cheese and the crust was perfect.
What I Ate:
Main Course - basic small pizza with mushrooms
Katz's Delicatessen:
Being the lover of all Jewish food that I am, I had to hit up a deli while in New York. It happened to be the day I was supposed to see my Jewish aunt so it worked out perfectly. I chose Katz's because I had heard of it before. Little did I know that it was the scene of "When Harry Met Sally". The restaurant was packed and covered wall to wall in photos of celebrities who had eaten there. Reminds me of a few deli's from home....
What I Ate:
Drink - Dr. Brown's Vanilla Soda
Food - Roast Beef Sandwich with Cole Slaw and Thousand Island (typical.)
Dinner
Angelo's of Little Italy:
It may be considered a "tourist trap" but it was absolutely one of the best Italian meals I have ever had. I go out for Italian quite often and find myself always ordering the same things but they really got it right. Beware: even with a reservation, there is a wait.
What I Ate:
Appetizer - Mozzarella di Bufala Affumicata alIa Griglia (which in English is: Grilled Smoked Buffalo Mozzarella with Sun-dried Tomatoes and Wild Mushrooms)
Main Course - Vitello Piccata (Veal with Artichokes, Capers and Lemon Sauce)
Side Dish - Fried Zucchini (one of my many obsessions)
The Four Seasons Restaurant:
This has always been my pre-theater restaurant for as long as I can remember. Sitting in the pool room makes the meal lovely. The food and service is perfect and the Cherry Blossom's are a great addition to the room. Also, if you're celebrating a birthday or anniversary, let them know. A giant plate of cotton candy will be brought to your table.
What I Ate:
Appetizer - Caesar Salad
Main Course - Crab Cakes
The Burger Joint in Le Parker Meridian:
Best. Burger. Ever. Well maybe not as good as Apple Pan but this is a close second. It is literally a hole in the wall behind the front desk of the hotel. The glowing burger is the sign outside the room. Line up. Order. Grab your food. Grab a table. Or not.... Some people rudely snatched tables from others. Instead of waiting around, we took our burgers to bed and later ordered room service for dessert. A perfect low-key night in the crazy city. Don't let the long line scare you. It's well worth the wait.
What I Ate:
Drink - Vanilla Milkshake
Main Course - Burger and Fries (with "the works")
Pastis
Located in the uber-trendy Meatpacking District, Pastis is a delicious French bistro. It's owned by the same owners as Balthazar so they had a similar flair. After a long day shopping in the Village and Soho, the trip over to the Meatpacking District was well worth it. This meal was divine! The menu's being paper place mats were a nice touch.
What I Ate:
Appetizer - Mixed Green Salad
Main Course - Steak Frites with Bernaise
Dessert
Shake Shack
Even though it is known for its burgers, Shake Shack makes for a great after dinner stop. They have frozen custard which happens to be one of my favorite sweet treats.
What I Ate:
Great White Way - vanilla custard, marshmallow sauce, crispy crunchies
(part of the proceeds went to Broadway Cares)
Max Brenner
For anyone who dreams of being part of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", this is the place for you. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, you are surrounded by a strong chocolate scent. I'm not the biggest chocolate fan but this place made me a temporary chocolate lover. Beware: once again, even with a reservation, there is a wait at night.
What I Ate:
Choco Pops - Dark Hot Chocolate with Chocolate Wafer Balls
(the "hug mug" the drinks come in is my new obsession, I might have to order one)
The Spectacular Melting Chocolate S'mores Sundae
Serendipity 3
This has been a long time favorite of mine. Even more so because I adore the film "Serendipity". I come here for full meals but the only part I want to focus on is the dessert. You can order almost anything on the menu and it's AMAZING. And once again, there is a wait. I waited 45 minutes at 10pm for a table for two. It was worth it though. I couldn't imagine skipping Serendipity 3 on a trip to the city.
What I Ate:
Pecan Pie Sundae
Frrrrrozen Hot Chocolate
(this is what they're famous for but everything else is equally as good)
Other restaurants not mentioned because they were dined at during a different trip:
-Il Mulino
-Felidias
-Carmines
-Nobu
If you would like to hear about any of them, let me know!
I hope you enjoyed the journey through New York restaurants. Stay tuned for the next part on my New York, I Love You series.

better butter
by Emily
when i was young, i had at terrible peanut butter allergy. one day the allergy disappeared but my love for peanut butter had completely diminished. growing up, everyone had pb&j for lunch at school and just the look of it made me want to vomit. it was such a simple meal that i could not enjoy like everyone else. recently, i have re-found my love for peanut butter but i don't think i would eat it as frequently as i do now if i had not come across better butter. i read about it on fit chick in the city and decided to order some to try.
better butter uses all natural ingredients and manages to have a much lower calorie count than typical peanut butter. it comes in honey nut banana, nutty chocolate chip, maple pumpkin and cinnamon raisin.
i purchased the variety pack which included honey nut banana, nutty chocolate chip and maple pumpkin because i was not sure which flavor i would want.
i tweeted complaining about shipping prices to california and the people over at better butter so kindly threw in a free jar of cinnamon raisin so i was able to try all four flavors!
i threw this stuff on brown rice cakes along with bananas every day when i first received the package and pretty much ate myself into a better butter coma. it's absolutely delicious! i need to place another order soon because it most likely will be the only peanut butter i put into my body.
my favorite is the nutty chocolate chip because i am such a chocoholic and it reminds me of nutella which because of my strict diet i cannot currently consume. throw some of that on a rice cake and some sliced bananas and you've got a perfect snack or even a meal!
go get yourself some better butter, you will not regret it!
